top things Americans can't live without
HERE ARE TEN THINGS AMERICANS CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT:
Recently, "U.S. News and World Report" ran an article looking at sales figures going back to the start of the economic downturn in 2007.
--Other than essentials like food and shelter, the idea was to find the ten things Americans can't live without even when times are tough.
--Things like cigarettes, pornography, and even toilet paper all took hits. Here are ten things that didn't:
#1.) Laptops: According to the Consumer Electronics Association, laptop sales this year are expected to be twice what they were in 2007.
#2.) High-speed Internet: In a Pew Research Center survey last year, high-speed Internet was one of just three things people said was more of a necessity now than in 2006.
#3.) Smart phones: Overall, cell phone sales dropped last year for the first time ever, but sales of smart phones were actually up by 7%. And sales are expected to increase another 25% this year.
#4.) Education: Between 2008 and 2010, enrollment in private schools fell by less than 1%, while college enrollment has gone up.
#5.) Movies: Last year's total box office gross was more than $10.6 BILLION. That's a five-year high.
#6.) TV: According to a recent survey, the average American watches 18 hours of TV a week. That's two hours more than last year . . . maybe because everyone's sitting at home unemployed.
#7.) Music downloads: Last year, CD sales dropped by 21%, but song and album downloads increased by nearly as much.
#8.) Pets: For the past several years, the amount of money we spend on pet food, supplies, and veterinarian visits has continued to rise by about 5% a year.
#9.) Alcohol: Bar and restaurant sales are down, but overall sales of beer and wine are both up. In other words, people are drinking more, but they're doing it at home.
#10.) Coffee: According to the National Coffee Association, Americans have cut back on coffee from Starbucks and other restaurants by about 5% this year. But the number of Americans who make coffee at home has increased by about 4%.

Please read about the event and donate if you can
Every year during Bikes for Kids, I see a friend of mine from High School come out with her son Max to support Bikes for Kids. Max is big into cycling and comes out to say hello to us and Lance Armstrong every year. He's a great kid. Support this if you can. Easy to make a $5 donation online, don't you think?
You are invited to Max's Bicycle Hero Ride benefitting JB & Sandy's Bikes for Kids for the 94.7 radio station
on Saturday May 29, 2010 at 4pm in Champion Park, Cedar Park Texas.
Max has supported Bikes for Kids for years and decided that he wanted to have his own bike ride event
where his friends can have the experience of a real ride without too much pressure.
Max says, "It's not about the distance it's about the donations"!
He had to do a community service project for his Quest class so we finally had a deadline to get this done. You can
go to his website (www.MaxCannon.com) to get all the details about the ride. Since this is our first year - we don't
know what to expect - but I can guarantee you'll want to be in on the ground floor. He presented this event to
his entire school at the Quest fair and will have posters around the school trying to get a good turnout and a great
donations.
We hope to see you there - please feel free to pass on this invite!
12 Ways to reduce Cancer risk
TWELVE WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF GETTING CANCER:
May is National Cancer Research Month, so here's a list from "Prevention Magazine" of twelve ways to reduce your cancer risk . . .
#1.) GET A LITTLE SUN. Vitamin D lies dormant in your skin until ultraviolet rays from the sun activate it. And getting 10 to 15 minutes of sun a few days a week can help prevent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, breast cancer, and colon cancer.
--Just don't get burnt. Every time you get a sunburn, you increase your chances of developing skin cancer.
#2.) DRINK DECAF. According to two Harvard University studies, drinking two or more cups of decaf a day might lower your risk of rectal cancer by 52%. Researchers think it's because coffee makes you go to the bathroom more often.
--But they have no idea why decaf has better results than regular coffee.
#3.) LISTEN TO KATIE COURIC. Colon cancer is the second deadliest type of cancer there is. So if it runs in your family, schedule a colonoscopy before your 50th birthday at the latest . . . like Katie Couric did on live television in 2000.
#4.) EAT AN ORANGE EVERY DAY. Research shows that if you have enough vitamin C in your system, it kills the bacteria that cause peptic ulcers and lead to stomach cancer.
#5.) LOSE TEN POUNDS. Even if you're not technically overweight, gaining ten pounds after the age of 30 increases your risk of developing breast cancer, cervical cancer, and pancreatic cancer.
--And according to the American Cancer Society, obesity is to blame for 20% of all cancer deaths among women, and 14% among men.
#6.) STEAM YOUR BROCCOLI. A bunch of different studies have shown that eating large amounts of broccoli can prevent cancer from developing in your stomach, lungs, ovaries, bladder, and colon.
--And steaming it locks in a cancer-fighting compound called sulforaphane (--pronounced sul-FOR-a-fane) that's been shown to stop the growth of breast cancer cells. But microwaving doesn't work. It strips out most of the antioxidants.
#7.) EAT BANANAS AND CARROTS. In a Swedish study, women who ate four to six bananas every week cut their risk of kidney cancer by 54%. And root vegetables like carrots did the same thing.
#8.) CHECK FOR NEW MOLES. The most common place for women to get skin cancer is on your legs. For guys, it's around your head, neck, and arms. But you're supposed to check your ENTIRE body. And ideally, someone ELSE should do it.
--If you're over 40, see the dermatologist once a year even if you DON'T have any new moles.
#9.) DRINK MILK. It's good for your bones, but it also might prevent colon cancer. Researchers at Dartmouth gave people 1,200 milligrams of calcium every day. That's the equivalent of three eight-ounce glasses of milk.
--After four years, the people who took calcium developed 36% fewer pre-cancerous growths in their colon compared to the people who took a placebo.
#10.) EAT ANYTHING WITH TOMATOES IN IT. Lycopene reduces your cancer risk. And men who eat a lot of pizza, spaghetti, and ketchup are less likely to get prostate cancer. But be careful how much ketchup you eat. It's loaded with salt.
#11.) DON'T EAT HOT DOGS. A study of 190,000 people found that eating one hot dog a day boosts your risk of pancreatic cancer by 67%. And pancreatic cancer is almost always fatal. The same goes for sausages and other processed meats.
#12.) QUIT SMOKING NOW. Everyone talks about cigarettes causing lung cancer, but they also cause cancer of the mouth, larynx, and esophagus. Plus, smoking increases your chances of stomach, liver, prostate, colon, and breast cancer too.
--The good news is, if you quit smoking right now, in 15 years your risk of developing lung cancer will be almost as low as if you'd never smoked.

10 reasons to stay single
Sometimes it sucks being single. Especially when all your friends are dating or married. But there's a lot to be said for the single life. Here are ten reasons it's actually BETTER to be single . . .
#1.) YOUR CAREER WILL BENEFIT. It takes time to build a relationship . . . and that's time you COULD be spending on your career. When you're single, you don't have to think twice about staying late at the office, or bringing home extra work.
#2.) YOU NEVER NEED TO MAKE PLANS FOR TWO. When you're single, you don't have to run your plans by someone else, or ask "permission" before you do something. You can do what you want, when you want.
#3.) YOU'LL BE HEALTHIER. The first thing you do when you lock down a boyfriend or girlfriend is let yourself go. There's no need to eat right or exercise if you're not chasing tail. You know it's true.
#4.) WEDDINGS ARE MORE FUN. Going to a wedding when you're single is a completely different experience. Everyone is drinking and having a good time, and if you play your cards right, everyone wants to hook-up afterwards.
#5.) YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR PERSONAL SPACE. Does this one even need to be explained?
#6.) YOU'LL SAVE MONEY. Sure, you spend a lot of money when you're single and dating. But no one spends more than a married couple: They're always re-doing the living room, taking trips to visit family, and having kids.
#7.) THE SEX IS BETTER. There are definitely benefits to sleeping with the same person every night. For example . . . okay, I can't think of one. I guess you get to know their likes and dislikes, and vice versa. But that's usually where it ends.
#8.) YOU CAN WATCH WHATEVER YOU WANT. When you're single, you never have to fight over the remote, or have someone "accidentally" record over the Megan Fox movie you TiVo'd.
#9.) YOU CAN SPEND MORE TIME WITH YOUR FRIENDS. No matter how hard you try, you'll ALWAYS hang out with your friends less once you're in a relationship.
#10.) YOU LEARN ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT AND NEED. Being single doesn't mean being alone. It's actually a great opportunity to learn about yourself . . . because only YOU know what really makes YOU happy.
