Not doing well on the computer resto

Things didn't go so well with Mr. Notebook. Quick recap. I fried my computer when my daughter knocked my drink onto my keyboard. I lost everything. A years worth of pics, all my quicken data, all contacts, all email, etc....  I know what you're thinking... you should have backed it up! No shit. That's exactly what I had sat down to do when the drink got knocked over. In fact, I had backed up my iphone, wiped it clean to do a software upgrade, knowing I could back up all my data. I had a external hard drive on my desk to back up all my critical data.
So I go to Mr. Notebook because I hear they are good at this stuff. The guy asked me if I "tried to turn the computer on". I replied yes.  His response "bad idea". I got all this attitude from the freaking guy and felt like I was in trouble. He suggested letting it sit for four or five days to dry out and it "might" start.  I hate arrogant techie guys, they are so rude and can't believe we don't understand computers as well as they do. If the roles were reversed, I could easily explain to this guy where a vagina is on a woman... and his head would spin...
so in the meantime. I have lost everything. Most upset about the pictures I lost... for now. Something will happen and something will restore this data.
In the meantime. My head is spinning making the transition to "Mac Guy". I'm optimistic, but it's a looooooooong road ahead. Can you tell I look overwhelmed?

Hey JB,

Any savy computer tech should be able to take the hard drive out and install it in either a desktop system or an external USB enclosure to access all of the files on it. Most likely the hard drive itself is not "fried".

JB be patient... once you go Mac you never go back. If you go to the apple store they actually have 2 great things you can sign onto the One TO One classes where you receive a total of 52 personalized mac classes so you can get started and with the package they will transfer all your data from your old laptop to your new mac... its worth the 99 dollars it cost cause the transfer is Free!!!
Have an awesome day!

Ryan is right... don't let the dorko dweeb at Mr. Notebook intimidate you. Bet your IT guy at work can stand a few extra bucks and restore it for you in no time. Have no fear your data is still here. Godspeed.

I have restored drowned cell phones by putting them in tupperware with some uncooked rice. The rice absorbs the moisture. Leave it there for a couple of days then give it a try.

Yes they are absolutely right. The HD will not likely be hurt by the liquid spill. Even if it is, the actually surface where the data is can be saved. If the drive works outside of your system, then your talking $50 for the data. If it doesn't work, they'll have to disassemble the drive and image the disk directly which costs $150-300.

Oh my God, I am ALSO overwhelmed by the Mac. I just got one too, and while it's shiny and new and exciting, I am going through right-click withdrawal!!

If your tech people offer to give you a Mac tutorial, sign me up please. I will come join.

Also - am tickled by the uncooked rice remedy to fixing technology! - Anonymous, whoever you are, let's be friends.

I had the same thing happen to me, my son spilled chocolate milk into my laptop! And I hadn't backed up in AGES. And yes, my hubby is an IT geek and I know better. But he took the hard drive out, put it in another system, and all my stuff was still there. No more chocolate milk around my laptop though.
